Thanks.
The plan is to add in some black (mirrors, windshield & rear window trim, maybe wheel centers) and some stainless (front grill, hood grill) to get some contrast.

Looking great, if you are going to clear it, you must give the existing paint time to fully cure.Did you add hardener/activator to the paint? Either bake it or set it in the sun to speed things up. I cleared the activated single stage on my 74 Thing. To ensure the curing I raised the temp in my garage to 80 deg for 4 days then parked it in the sun for 3. Wetsand well with 800 with liquid dish soap in the water.

No idea about curing the paint and such, but if you want to come to Florida and paint mine in the next 5 years or so you got a place to stay

I may have to take you up on that.

You are welcome to come anytime. The last time I painted a vehicle, it was with a single stage urethane (I think it was anyway), it was around 1990, in the driveway. I was painting a new to me 1974 datsun pickup. No experience, No paint booth, No clear, No hardener, No nothing except for some fish eye eliminator, me with a respirator, a 2.5 horse compressor with a 2 gallon tank(maybe) and a 50 year old paintgun, The paint job actually turned out ok, once I sanded and buffed it for days. If you want to come to Florida for a few days, you have a bedroom to call your own, all meals provided, 2 blocks from the beach vacation, but you may have to deal with an irritated wife and a cranky baby.

Well in 5 years the cranky baby will be on his/her way to becoming a "real person" {I have 3 kids and 5 grand kids, of which only one is not quite a "real person" but quickly getting there, maybe two as some days my 19 year old son makes me wonder} and when this happens the wife will be less irritated. Unless you ramp it up and get her going. Ask me how I know. LOL

Back to the thread at hand. Jeff you've done a great job on the Avenger. It's taken some time but a lot of people would have given up on it, Probably why it was in the shape it was. You've added some very nice touches to it that gives others ideas too no matter what kind of kit you have. Loving the color too!!

When do we get to see it in sunlight?
|
|
|
Post by jspbtown on Jan 29, 2011 10:25:19 GMT -5
Sunlight? Well sunlight is not a problem really..its the 3+ feet of snow that is in my yard. My shop is about 200 feet away from my house and I have to walk through thigh high snow to get to it. Its not going to see sunlight for several more months at the earliest.
I use Kirker Ultra-glo urethane paints because I like them, they spray well (when I have my head on straight) and they are affordable. I usually like to spray the clear after a 30 minute flash time of the color but I had way to many mistakes this time to do that. I will do some wet sanding with 800 grit to get it smoother and then apply my clear.

Sunlight only works if it is warm out. Spraying clear after a 30 min flash is fine for base clear but with a base of single stage, it has to fully cure.

Please feel free to review the spec sheet from Kirker. Third paragraph under "application": www.kirkerautomotive.com/images/PDF/ULTRAGLO.pdfAnd a picture of my Manx done with a Kirker metallic color (single stage) and then 3 coats of clear applied after a 30 minute flash: Same car two years later at a car show: Manufacturer says it can be done this way, and my work product agrees.

jspbtown, Congrats on this build, I think it is good that you took the time you did to make things right on this car. Good job! I am wondering if you would mind terribly, if I created a page from the details and pictures of this post (and this question goes for the owner of this forum as well) and put them on another website, avenger-valkyrie.org. I think the readers there would be interested to see your project. Of course it goes without saying, that you are welcome to join the forum their as well.
Hope this is not too presumptuous of me to ask. I saw nothing in the terms of service to restrict this type of question, I know some people see things like this as a hijacking of members or information, for my part I see it as sharing info with those who want/need to see it. Anything to promote our hobby I see as good for all of us.

Its fine with me. I too agree that it is all about promoting the hobby. However, I certainly don't speak for the Board Admins. The people here have been very accepting of my non-Bradley builds and they have been very generous in allowing me to post here.
I have plenty of other pics available as well if you want to PM me.

curious what does the roll bar attach to in the back?

Post by jspbtown on Feb 4, 2011 18:16:52 GMT -5
On the Manx? It was just bolted through the fiberglass to a backing plate. It was clearly a "show" cage. It was not triangulated. I did not build it as a "roll cage". It had only slightly more protection than the single hoop offered.

As I mentioned in my other post, you HAVE been in this rodeo for a bit.......This car is killer.... Of coarse, now Im going to be on the lookout for an Avenger. Not to worry, funds and time are limited, and I cant remember seeing one for at least 25 years, my Dads buddy had one. His had a turbo Corvair in it. Talk about problematic... Keep this up, this is one nice piece of work!

Like I have said before...this is the most difficult kit I have restored to date.
Usually my kits have taken about 1 year. This one is going on 4! Granted...I have been busy with my son and his sports, but the frustration this one has caused has turned me back towards focusing on buggies. That is after I finish my Aztec 7 and unless I can get a hold of a Montage.
All the body panels, the doors, and the custom features (pedals that mount to the firewall, CNC hydraulics, linear actuators, recessed Corvette door handles, etc etc) have made getting the body done very time consuming. I am looking forward to the wiring, and finishing off the mechanicals in the coming months.
Once this is done its on to the Deserter which should be quick. Then the Aztec 7 which might take some time.

I'm working on the body for paint right now . The color is a toss up I love the yellow but not 100% sold on it yet. when you see the black stripes it really looks sharp!

Spent Sunday touching up the yellow and laying down the clear. I was much better with my gun settings so everything laid down nice and flat. A couple of small dirt flecks in the clear that I should be able to buff out. Overall its probably an 8 out of 10.

Will try to get some this weekend. I need to dis-assemble my spray booth. It makes the colors look all funky.
I coated most of the exposed fiberglass last night with bedliner. I just have a couple of spots left that I will probably do tomorrow night.

Truly inspirational work here, bud. I cant wait till the LAST round of snow melts off my project so I can get going on it. BTW, cant you get replacement hardware for the buckets from NAPA? Seems to me that GM used existing hardware, not Corvair-specific parts. Dont you just hate rust?

The GM adjusters were a little funky, but I was able to find them. No...the parts places I went to had nothing like them unfortunately.

I got the CNC reservoirs mounted last night in between driving my son to and from hoop practice. I just need to get a measurement for the brake & clutch lines to get them fabbed up.
