Thanks for the additional info on the wiring harness. As for me I picked up the casters, and gathered all the supplies around the track and I will try and get this thing together tonight or tomorrow night. I am anxious to get this body off and start sanding it down and at the same time try and get this motor fired up.
Its 97 here today and playing in a garage in the middle of the day with no ventilation is not my idea of a good time..haha

Looks good.
Why does that tranny look different then most Type 1s? is it just me?

Another interesting thing is the block number AE026753 shows its a 71 1600 dp, but on closer inspection is appears to be a sp.

Well I did a little sanding today The car was painted sometime ago and while sanding I went through the top coat, some primer, and then got to some metal flake paint. Should there be something else under there, or is it even necessary to go past the metal flake paint?

Do not go through the metal flake. Thats in the gelcoat which you want to preserve as long as it is stable.

Hey, Jeff, nice project! For what its worth, your tranny looks just like both manuals I have and they came from Type 1's. Im going to use the autostick I got with the Baja Bug purchased a couple months ago, but that will be in the bug Im doing, the Brad will stay manual. Are you sticking with a stock clutch or will you use somthing else? Oh, and are you sticking with the top as it is , or will you remove it and find the top its supposed to have? Either way, Im sure it will look great when you are done. What color will it be?

More sanding going on ... As far as the color goes it looking like I am going to do the GM Synergy Green from the new Camaro. I think it will look insane

Well I ran into something I did not expect tonight. Yellow Gelcoat? The front of the car is loaded with what appears to be a filler/bondo of some kind. Here is a photo... I am a little confused because everything to the rear is metal flake. Also on the hood the first spot I started sanding did not appear to have any hint of gelcoat. It just went right to fiberglass. You can see the spot above the yellow... I have the frame build to get the body in the air and I will do it tomorrow. I am curious to get underneath it because as someone pointed out maybe it is a bradley rear with a front of something else

IT RUNS! Well is starts, shakes, and leaks a bit of oil. So if that is running then this thing is top notch

Check your trans mounts, that much shake with a relatively smooth idle indicates they are finished. If you change them go with 74 or later. They look like this. Available at cip1.com $8.50 for the left and the same for the right. Many companies sell the ones below as HEAVY DUTY but they are no where near as strong or good. Avoid anything made of urethane.

Thanks Dan, I did notice that it was shaking pretty good. Its leaking a bit of oil from somewhere as well. I was just so excited to hear it run I gave myself a job well done then ran home and grabbed a victory Unsweetened Iced Tea would it be these you are referring to www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=VWC-113-301-264

They will raise the engine slightly, about 3/16", but the pros outweigh this one con.

What's wrong with urethane? Gary Hammond, Urethane is a cheap compromise. When used for tranny/engine mounts it does not have the vibration absorbing qualities of rubber. They are noisy and transmit a lot of vibration. When used as a substitute for bearings, such as in the beam where the trailing arms plug in, or for bushings [rear torsion bar, suspension bushings] it wears out real fast if the slightest bit of dirt gets in. When used for the steering column rag joint it is just an accident waiting to happen. One crack and you risk loosing all steering. Being in the automotive trade, I have installed all kinds of urethane products as the customer usually insists on the part that costs less. As a result I have had to replace those parts constantly due to them wearing out constantly. It is one of those products that got so much hype that people think it is the best. Sort of like 009 distributors.

Thanks for the insightful post Dan. This is what I love about this place. I love to save money like the next person but I also do not need a motor falling off while driving..hahaha
Hey let me ask you. Is there a repair manual you prefer over the others for the 1600cc engine? I really would like to pick on up. I have owned several VWs over the years but this one is the only one I decided to get my hands (or gloves) dirty with
Thanks
