The latch for the engine door looks like a standard VW piece but has anyone found a source for the striker? The one I have is worn pretty bad.

If you will send me a mailing address and only need one, I will send you one for a buck...It may need to be buffed or plated, but it is an original.. bobevans Thanks! Yes I only need one...I gave the owner 4 to have powdercoated and he lost one somewhere. The other three have been coated & installed.

I just ordered part number WC 15-72 from Metro Moulded Parts, Inc. tonight...hoping it fits! If you go the same route you'll need two pieces.

We're leaving the front bumper off of the GTII we are working on & putting some nerf bars on instead. We are trying to find some marker lights to put on the front that would sit flush with the body. Anyone have any ideas and/or pictures of what would fit?

The console was missing when I started working on this car so I purchased a console with some other parts. But...the arm rest pad is longer than the console so I think it has been cut down. If you have any pics a complete console...installed or not...could you post them or send them to me?
Thanks!

Definitely my kind of folks...Do you have a contact for "Rebel Wire" ;D I am beginning to wire my Mini T and I really need the help... www.rebelwire.com/I called today and got an answering machine...same message as if they were closed. I was a little put off but I got a call back later in the afternoon. The guy said they were closed...he lost the roof and porch of his house, the business is beat up, and the yard is trashed. Guess a tornado hit them pretty hard. He said they hope to be up and running full speed Monday though. That reversed my first impression...I'm impressed that they called back so soon given the circumstances.

The windshield washer nozzles on my old '71 GT were angled high enough they'd catch the slipstream and hit the car behind me. I used them a couple of times.
I called Rebel Wire...guess their roof and front porch is gone from a tornado this week! Anyway the guy said if I wanted to go with the VW Beetle harness (12 circuit) the wires for the engine would be long enough and they could add an extra 4 circuits onto the side of the fuse block for around $15. I'd just need to tell them what the circuits would be fore and they'd use the appropriately labeled wire. Might be a good way to go.

I used over 20 feet of heat shrink tubing. Yep...I called a company today about buying a 25' roll. Also ordered a starter Weatherpack kit and a set of crimpers today. We stock Weatherpack connectors at work so I'm hoping I can use out of my kit at night and refill when I go into work the next day.

For crimped end hydraulic hoses you are talking maybe $40. For hose barbs and slip on hose with clamps maybe $12. And this is to save an engine that can easily cost $1500 to replace? When I do plumbing work we ALWAYS replace the water supply hoses because they get old and crack with age with just 30psi of water running through them.

I have run basic dune buggies with as little as 6 circuits. My current Avenger has a 21 circuit and I have lots of extras like power windows, linear actuators, a stereo, etc. I think I might have 4 left over after I ran everything. I have posted some pictures of the wiring in my build thread. Part of my problem is I'm building this car for someone else...and the guy keeps changing his mind on me. Last I knew he wants a big stereo I'm planning on a linear actuator for the headlights. For things like that how do I know what size of fuse to go with? Hmmm...those kits are made in the US...might go with them instead.

I'm getting ready to rewire the GTII. I'm comfortable enough with physically running wires and making connections but I'm not sure how to figure out how many circuits I need. I realize it is by amps and I'd have fuses with corresponding ratings...but where would I find the information on how to set it all up? As for grounds...should I just run a decent sized wire to a couple of different terminal blocks and run my individual grounds to those? For the wiring kits themselves, this is the 12 and 18 circuit kits I'm looking at. Any reason not to get the 18 circuit so things can be added at a later date? www.speedwaymotors.com/Economy-12-Circuit-Wiring-Harness,2352.html www.speedwaymotors.com/Mr-Roadster-20-Circuit-Wiring-Harness,42872.html

Currently working in the parts dept of a John Deere dealership. My schooling is in automotive restoration and I worked in restoration shops then a Caterpillar parts dept and finally a mechanic for a contractor for the Army before my current job.

Why not just use metal braided hydraulic hose? A lot of parts stores and the Deere dealer where i work build custom hoses...I'm just going to go that route. Custom length and they'll prob outlast the car.

I'd REALLY like to get at least one of those small lathes you see once in a while. You can ALWAYS find some use for one.

Well, I think you just sold a shifter! lol I asked the owner about the shifter and he wants a reverse lockout. Most people on Samba seem to like that one too even if they have had to modify it slightly. Guess I'll add it to the order list.

It depends on what speedometer you are using. If its the factory one then yes, a type 1 speedo cable will work. Some use Bus cables as they are a little longer. Look at cip1 as they will have the overall length differences. Ok, thanks. I think the gauges will all eventually be replaced but I'm lobbying for using what we have for now. I'm sure there will be a lot of small issues to work out to get this thing on the road and driving and I'm going to have to hustle to get this car done by spring. The VW use the drivers side to open rear heater ducts (for the rear passengers) if I recall correctly. Most kits don't use them. The stock VW heater cable will have one connection for the handle, but then it splits into two cables to control the dual heater boxes. You can do several things: 1. Run it like a stock Bradley with 1 cable and use the ducts to control where the heat goes (floor vs dash) 2. Use both handles and run duct work to make one side (operating off 1 heater box) to provide heat and one side to provide defroster off the other heater box. It really depends on what you want to accomplish. I already bought a stock Y type cable so I guess I'll go with that for now and we can re evaluate after some drive time. Thanks again for the info.

Does a GTII use a stock Beetle speedo cable? I'm placing an order for a few parts I didn't realize I needed (shift rod bushing for one) and I'd like to replace the cable if it easy to obtain.
Also, the interior of this car was gutted when I bought it so I'll soon be working on replacing the various cables, putting together the shifter, park brake handle, etc. I ended up having to buy a new throttle pedal assembly (too many pieces corroded/missing to rebuild), new park brake lever (pieces missing), and I found a kit to order to replace the fiber washers for the small handle on the passenger side of the park brake handle which appears to control the heater box cables. It looks like there used to be a small cable on the driver's side of the park brake handle though...I don't have a handle or cables in the tube to see where they go. Was this something used on a Bradley?
Thanks for any help!
Derek

The GTII's I've seen with V8s usually have a custom tube frame and the engine in the rear. It may not be possible to keep the engine in the front and have the body fit over it normally. You could see just how high it would have to be and suspend the body over like a body lift maybe?

I've got the replacement front beam installed on the pan and went to put the steering box on and noticed the numbers 13 and 14 stamped on the clamp next to notches that are offset. I checked the Bentley manual and it says for a Beetle to make sure the notch marked 13 is on the lug on the beam. That doesn't make any sense to me...there are two lugs on the beam and one goes in each notch...no matter how you put the clamp. How is this thing supposed to go on?
Thanks,
Derek

Parts are cheap on SAMBA, but its really starting to add up. I started out being asked by a friend to get his GTII running. He assured me it would most likely just need the brakes and fuel system checked out and a tune up. I'm hoping to have the pan back on wheels for the first time in about a year this weekend. Ugh. Good luck!

Thanks! I think I got something that will work. One benefit of working at a John Deere dealer I guess...I ran into work to get some 12MM lock washers for the front beam to pan bolts and looked through the washers there. I found one that was approx 1.3" OD and .197" thick if I remember correctly...and hardened...so I think they'll work. I'm converting to disc brakes front and rear and I took a load of old/stock parts to my in law's farm for storage and I bet the washers went along for the ride.
