Thanks. I did look there, and did not see one for the Mechanical Tach. It has 4 terminals on the back . they are labeled +12, +6, 1, - . I assume the 12 is 12v, got the - , but whats the 6 or 1?

This is what happens when you try to work on things when you are tired

Mechanical tach? Are you sure? It has a cable running out of the back?
If it electric I would assume the +6 is for 6 volt systems maybe (especially if it is a vintage style tach...so don't use it) and the 1 would go to the negative side of the ignition coil.
Oh...I may have ne just like that in my shop. Not 100% perfect but probably an exact replica. If your interested I could check and see. $40 shipped to you.

Yeah I am a dummy. Only one gauge is mechanical the rest are electric. There is also a +12 on this gauge. So I guess it will run both 6 and 12?
See if you have the gauge and If so I will grab that from you for the $40 . The metal edges on these were pretty rough till I got out the can of flat black paint..haha

Thats my thinking...either 6 or 12 volt. If its old it might have been built right around the time when VWs were going from 6 to 12 volt.
My son has a soccer game tonight but I will try to get a picture of it with a measuring tape after the game.

The gauge you have can be fixed. I have replaced the glass and bezels on hundreds of VDO gauges. Best thing is that there are a lot of used gauges out there. I usually went to the junk yard to purchase them as spare parts; it is surprising what you can find.
There are other VDO gauges that use the same glass including a few of their clocks. There are also many commercial/industrial gauges with similar glass.
Typically it is a decision on whether you want the stock gauge or a replacement. If you want the stock gauge, replacing the glass is about 50% the cost of buying a replacement unit. The glass is still available from VDO if you desire to have it repaired professionally.
I have a newer (late 90's) VDO tachometer if you are interested. It was part of a package made for VW Beetles. I will verify the size today, I believe it is the same diameter.
Thank you, Michael

Funny I just looked at the other gauges I have and it seems I have an Volt meter and not an amp meter, and an lbs/sq inch gauge instead of an oil pressure gauge (unless thats what it is) . And I also have no temp gauge

Ok, you should keep the Volt meter for starters. Amp meters only give you readings after there is a problem, such as a short or after you blow fuses, have dead batteries ect. Every thing looks fine until after its too late. the Volt meter allows you to see that the generator (or alternator) is kicking out, and also if there is high power draw when something is on indicating you have a potencial electrical issue. Car companys diched the amp meter and went to a volt meter for a reason, so keep it... The boost per sq in gauge IS the oil pressure, why its like that i have no idea, but it does look cooler than saying oil pressure. as far as not having a tepmature gauge, You have a air cooled motor (if its a Vw that is) so there is not a radiator to cool the engine. it is cooled by the oil and air flow, if you think its getting too hot, look into some oil cooling systems, and a higher oil flow system. A wise friend told me the faster you go, the cooler it gets, just make sure you have good brakes. good luck my friend Bob

I tried sending you a PM but my home computer wouldn't do it...not sure why. Here are the pics: It came out of the orange Bradley I built so I bet it is spot on. Its 3 1/4 from outside edge to outside edge. On the back it has 4 tabs labeled +12, +6, 1 & -...just like yours. There are a couple of small paint chips on the bezel but no dents. The glass is scratch free. It has the mounting bracket and screws but no lamp socket. If you want it then PM me your address and I will send you mine.

Thanks Man,
I will take it. I am missing a few of the lamp sockets and they are not easy to come by. The new vdo gauges use ones that are a few mm smaller or something so the vw shop told me
