Hi Jeff, The propane trick should work well when directed toward any vacuum leak, including the throttle shafts. But since it ran fine before sitting for two years, I sort of doubt that it's worn throttle shafts. Might be some other vacuum leak caused during the carb cleaning process though. I still lean more toward a problem caused by old gas from sitting so long. I've run into a lot of problems over the years caused by stale, rotten fuel. And today's fuels go stale a lot quicker than what was used 10 years ago! Gary Hammond,

Propane torch, turn it on a little, DON"T LIGHT, and pass it near the throttle shaft (while you keep it running). If the idle smooths or picks up I bet leaking throttle shafts. You can use carb cleaner also. it will seal a leak for a very short time. Spray on vac. hoses & fitting, carb base, carb throttle shaft ( both sides ) & rubber boots. If the engine smooths out or keep running you have found a leak - fix it then test again.

here's what i dont get. when i first start it, it runs really good.... then quickly dies.
so to me old gas, vacuum leaks would not let it run good at all. so what's changing. well, the engine gets hot, the carb bowl has to fill, the choke opens.
from these symptoms could it be the electric choke? can i turn the key on, pull the wire off and on from the choke to see if it clicks?

I had a similar problem when I first installed an electric fuel pump. It overwhelmed my carbs and flooded the engine as soon as the bowls overfilled. (dual Kadron's) The fuel came pouring out of the vents and right into the carb. Had to put in a fuel pressure regulator. Not sure if you're running a stock pump or aftermarket...
just a thought...

good thought....
i'm running stock fuel pump. plus, i have not changed the setup that the car came with and it ran good. so its really just sitting that's done this and maybe cold weather, although i have it garaged.
i used fresh fuel, but havent changed the filter yet. that's next.... thanks, bob

Choke won't "click" if you disconnect them..they are a metal winding and are essentially noise free.
My explanation for the vacuum leaks is this: When you start the car the choke plate valve slams shut and "x" amount (very low) of air gets by the choke plate. Normally this richens the mixture so the car can run. If you have a big air leak your mixture actually leans out to where it should be, so the car runs fine. As the choke plate slowly opens you allow more air to get in. When its wide open it is calibrated to allow just the right amount of air in to mix with the fuel for combustion. However, with the vacuum leak that is now off balance. More air is entering the intake stream and the fuel (which was correct for the amount of air coming in through the top but not with the additional air coming in from the leak) mixture becomes very lean and the car dies.
Old gas can surely be an issue. I remember my brother in law brought me his leaf blower cause it ran terribly. I drained it, cleaned it, looked for an issue and couldn't find anything so I put in a little new gas/oil mix and it ran great. I gave it back to him and he filled it up with old gas and it stopped running. He of course complained and gave it back to me. It wasn't until he used his neighbors leaf blower with his gas did he realize it was bad gas.
However, the fact that you can run the car but slightly covering the intake area of the carb leads me to vacuum leak. Like Gary said, maybe not throttle shafts. Maybe a torn gasket during rebuild.

gonna replace fuel filter, tighten everything. and maybe try the propane thing (fire scare me). if that doesnt get it,
then pulling the carb is my christmas present. if i get to that point i may submit pictures of torn down carb for a little help. many thanks....

Hi Bob, While you have the filter out to replace it, check the fuel pump pressure and volume of flow. Should hold about 3 psi and flow more than just a dribble. Gary Hammond,

o.k.
gary, no real way of checking psi of fuel pump, but..... i did exchange fuel again, new filter, tighten carb, intake etc. soooo....
started it, ran fine, at about 1 min. started hesitating but if i closed butterfly a little OR increased to faster idle it stayed running and sounded good. pullling the carb just doesnt make sense.
jeff, i'm gonna try to check for leaks but are yall sure its not just automatic choke something another??
frankly if i just set it to always high idle, i'd be o.k. but that seems like easy way out... i'lll keep trying... big bob

Hi Bob, Your choke may be set too lean. Your idle mix may be set too lean. You may still have a small vacuum leak. And you may not be getting enough exhaust heat to the carb base to completely vaporize the fuel. Is the heat riser tube hooked up and and getting hot? Gary Hammond,

all good things. all things i'm not sure about.
heat risers go from exhaust to intake, right?
merry christmas to all....

Hi Bob, heat risers go from exhaust to intake, right? big bob Right! These carbs like lots of exhaust heat applied to the intake manifold. Gary Hammond,

Hi Big Bob, Haven't seen any postings lately on this string. Did you get the carb problem solved? Gary Hammond,

-Gary, Big Bob has her up for sale... which is too bad, with as much time he has in her, shes so close to being a dream come true.
-Big Bob, if you are reading this, We know you can do it, just a little more tweeking and you'll have a sweet sound of victory and a running beast that will put a smile on your face. Keep her, you'll be kicking yourself later if you don't.

yeah, i'm still here.....
just havent done any work on the car and would like to sell just because i've lost motivation. it's been like this the whole way. i'd make progress then get held up on something and i'd give up... then hit it again....
so, i'm still hanging. appreciate the thoughts and comments. as it gets warmer, maybe i'll get at it again.....

Big Bob I sure hope so, you among others on here have been an inspiration to me, and have kept me motivated by knowing that I'm not the only one having issues, and finding ways to overcome setbacks. -Bob
