I think it varies from state to state, but I'm guessing you're going to need to get a new "bonded" title, or get the title from the guy for the bug that the replacement chassis came from and bring the whole lot to the DMV.

do you think i would be able to just purchase a old beat up beetle for cheap and swap out the chassis? would they be able to title it as a bradley or would it just be a beetle and would that be ok?

"an old beat up Beetle for cheap" will probably need expensive repairs.
What state are you in? Each state varies greatly on what is needed and what is not. Some states issue new VINs on specialty constructed vehicles. Some states you are screwed if your numbers don't match.
Lots of variable.

My thoughts are, if the old chassis rotted out, and the new one isnt from a stolen car, get the number-stamped piece of metel from the old chassis and rivit it on the new pan over the old one. If no one is looking for the doner car, who cares? Seems easier than dealing with the DMV . After all, NO car is going to last forever, and all need things replaced eventually. Chassis parts are no exception. VW seems to be the only ones who stamped the chassis instead of tagging the body, and Ive yet to see a Trooper or inspector take out the back seat to check my reg.

Does the guy you bought the car from still have the old rusty chassis? It would be cheaper to replace pans and refurb the old chassis with parts from the one currently under the car. Then the title would be no problem. If all else fails I have a ghia chassis that will need pans with a clear NC title available. It came from a running car that a guy wanted to stick a V8/custom frame in. Where in FL are you located?

rebel67 i was thinking about that but it seems like it would be obvious though if they were to check it. when i go to get it titled they have to inspect and confirm the that the vins match

I've found Florida DMV to be very helpful. Have you tried just going in with what you have and see what they say? Living part of the time in NYC I was prepared for the DMV from Hell. I was very pleasantly surprised -- cheerful friendly people who are there to sell license plates and make money for the state, not to beat you up and throw you out. I'd just go in on a fact finding mission with all the paperwork you can muster. I would not be surprised if you walked out with a title acceptance! Good Luck!!

smyrnaguy: the guy i got the car from still does have the chassis but he is up in arkansas and wont answer my calls now. so i think it would just be easiest to get a different chassis and just swap the whole chassis out or if its not in such good shape just change the whole tunnel out where the vin is stamped. what do you think

horen2tas: i did go in there and they told me i had to get the vin varified. they gave me a paper and said i could get the person i bought the car from to verify it or i could have a notary check the vin and notarize it. the only thing is i cant get a hold of the guy i bought the car from and even if i did and he verified it the title still wouldnt match the car. so im just trying to find the best way to have the car titled where the vin on the title matches the car

I hear you, no one wants a bad day at an inspection. Just out of curiosity, what happened to the title from the current pan? smyrnaguy has a good proposition for you. I hear Ghia parts are a good upgrade from older bug, so meybe you should go that route. -Mike

As I see it you still have some easy choices: 1. Get a notary to fill out the paper that the DMV gave you, the notary I used didn't check anything other than to sign the forms and seal them.
2. Get a machine shop with metal stamp set-up to do the vin you're looking for and and rivet onto the tunnel.
It sounds like the chassis you have now is OK so why go through all the hassle of getting another one.
The DMV down here is not that tough, I'd keep trying until you hit it. I know for sure the one in Ocala is very laid back. It may be worth a trip up to horse country to get it done!. The Walmart near the DMV has great western shirts for really cheap prices if that's any incentive!
Good Luck and think smoke and mirrors to get it done this isn't L.A.

I am in fl also. I am a bit confused. My car is titled by the body number only and my gtII was also. I have never had to give a chassis vin for anything. For the GT II I just went to the DMV and said the body number was the vin on a kit car and they said okay. I gave them the least amount of info I could so they would not start asking questions. Where do you have the chassis vin on the title? Eric A

Mike, the title from the current pan the guy said he had no title for. thats why i was just thinking about buying a chassis with a title and switching it out.

Is it a FL title?
As I said...many states issue their own VIN numbers to specialty constructed vehicles.

I can't recommend a machine shop where I am but have the following suggestion: Get onto thesamba.com and do a classified ads search, put in your zip code and choose a distance you're comfortable with, then start looking at the ads, I guarantee there's going to be someone in your neighborhood that will recommend a shop or has the experience to get over the hurdles you're facing with the DMV again good luck you can do this!!!! www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/search.php
