well im trying to remote my pulley on my vw, and its being alot of work. my book sez to "insert screwdriver in to slot till it sits on the crankcase, then get out your breaker bar and turn counterclockwise" ok so i did that. i broke a 1/4 inch diameter screwdriver. twice. then i got out the air impact wrench, noting. then i got out the electric impact wrench, still noting...
any good ideas?

Assuming you are talking about the generator/alternator pulley...If you are replacing it with a new one use a pipe wrench to hold it in place and use the impact on the nut. If you are going to reuse it, use a strap wrench or....use a bigger screw driver that takes up all the space in the notch & angle it the opposite way clock wise while you are turning the nut counter clockwise, it does not have to sit on the crankcase.
Regards,

If you have the motor out you will need the fly wheel lock. Click on string www.jcwhitney.com/flywheel-lock-for-vw/p2004289.jcwx?filterid=c39j6or.... take it up to your local garage and have them use their impact. If its still in the car put it in 1st gear, parking break on and than use a 200lb+ impact wrench or 1/2 or larger breaker w/4 'pipe extender for leverage. (I have not done it this way put I have been told it will work. I would be concerned w/ damaging the trans.) Regards,

An old family friend who has been a mechanic forever taught me a trick for getting that nut off of the crankshaft when they are really stuck. Put the socket on nut with a breaker bar and a length of pipe over the breaker bar. Rotate engine until pipe/breaker assembly is braced against the ground. Briefly turn engine over with the key. Just for a second. Has worked everytime I have tried it. The only problem is that I am not sure which direction the vw engine rotates, so it may tighten the nut instead of loosening it.

For what it's worth...I had some "frozen" lugs....I took the car down to my local tire dealer and he put his BIG impact wrench on them and they came off like butter.... ;D

if you want torque from an impact wrench, forget your "cheapo" ones like Chicago Pneumatic and Campbell Hausfeld, etc. Not that I have anything against them, as they work 90% of the time, but for real torque ya just can't beat an ingersoll-Rand. I do not have any affiliation with them, but I do have real world experience, as I worked my way through college and supplemented my meager income by working in a tire shop for ten years. Only one time that an Ingersoll failed for me. I was trying to remove the upper (threaded) balljoints from a 1996 dodge dakota and they were laughing at the Ingersoll. Final solution??? Lotsa heat from an oxy-acetylene torch on the upper control arms and a piece of pipe about 6 ft. long on the breaker bar. I did snap the breaker bar on the first try though. Other than that, I have never had an Ingersoll let me down. Of course, I have never had the breaker bar/pipe braced on to the ground to remove a stuck crankshaft nut fail me either. just my .02
