So last night I get around to diagnosing my generator problems. (see other post) I still have my old generator, so I start to remove the old one. There is NO room to pull the shroud up inside a Bradley. After about 2 hours of cursing, removing the generator pedestal, more cursing, and pushing up and back on the shroud as hard as I can, the generator is finally out. (at that point I knew I should have dropped the engine, but I was going to do it MY way!)
I get the new generator in, get everything hooked up and fire her up. 13.6 volts at idle! Sweet! Im in business again....but wait......Im now SPEWING oil from behind the fan shroud......oh shti! I must have damaged my oil cooler with all that pushing and prying. (Im still new to these engines, I honestly forgot it was back up there)
So....in a bit of a rage I drop the motor out (like i should have at first) and proceed to remove the cooler. Now, for those of you that have attempted this job with tins installed, I can honestly say its impossible. I took me 1 hour to remove 3 10mm nuts. So now I have the cooler off....
I can see NO visible damage. Either I cracked the housing where the bolts are brazed to the cooler body, or I knocked the body around enough to distort the oil seals. Now Im faced with running the cooler (and risking a leak...because I couldnt find any crack) or buying a new cooler. (which IM sure is going to set me back another 75 bucks after shipping and so on.
SOOOOO anyways......If you ever need to replace your generator....just drop the engine first. It will save you a headache, probably a hundred bucks, a bottle of whiskey and the looks you get from your girlfriend as you are throwing a temper tantrum over your project car.
PS- Where can I buy a stock replacement cooler? I cant seem to find them on the regular sites. (JC nutsney, Summit....)
