I still cant diagnose my charging problem. How can I test the generator alone and see if its working. ( I tried disconnecting all leads, grounding DF, starting car and checking voltage from D+ to ground.....I got nothing. All zero's....0.00.....which makes me think Im doing something wrong)

Ground df to case and attach 1 lead of meter. Other lead to d+. Should be 6v at idle 18 v at 1500 rpm. Only run a few seconds or will burn up.

Un hook wires to reg when testing

Ground DF, hook neg on voltmeter to DF, other lad to D+.........am I getting that right?

So sounds like generator is bad

That's right. If no volt its bad. Did you test meter on battery? I always use a cheap needle meter.

Battery reads 12.05 volts (Ive been running it on and off all night....with a 10 minute charge she will hit 12.40....)
You gotta be kidding me. This is a brand new (to me) engine. I drove 600 miles round trip for it. The previous owner raved about its condition. I am NOT a happy man.

Did you try to polarize?

Last night. She spun freely.....I thought that meant she was ok.....

Dizconnect belt, and wires to reg hook battery ground where you had volt meter ground to, then battery power to d+. And generator should spin.

Thats what I did last night. Pulled the belt, Grounded DF, Hooked hot source to D+.....she spun like a little motor. Can the generator properly polarize and still be sh/t?

Generator/Regulator Test!
Disconnect all wires from Generator. (tag them so you get them back right)
Connect a test light ( 6 or 12 volt what ever is appropriate) on generator to the "D+" terminal ... Ground other side of light.
Ground "DF" or "Field" on generator.
Start engine... If light comes on and brightness increases as engine rpm comes up your REGULATOR is bad ( generator works ) Caution over revving engine to fast will cause light to burn out.
IF light stays dark ( does not light ) , check test setup again to be sure its right... If you rev engine up and light still does not light GENERATOR is bad.
People with experience using a VOLT-OHM meter could use the meter instead of light... look for VOLTAGE increase..

But in theory if battery powers it I would think it would put out something.I would hook a 12 v bulb where you put meter and start and see if lights at all

Test light did not glow. This is fawking ridiculous.
Is there a way to bench test a generator? I have the one from my OLD motor and dont want to swap it out and find out I missed something......
But she polarized last night. I would think that she would put SOMETHING out.....but I get nothing. Nothing on DVOM, nothing from test lamp.....I guess the question is will a bad generator still polarize but fail to put out any voltage? That sounds impossible.....if it spins with a charge, it should be able to put out a charge....

Could prob run w drill and socket adapter or impact wrench etc to at least see some voltage

Heres my two cents, let me start by saying Im not familiar with VW gens, but have alot of industrial experience with generators and motors. If it is not a permanent magnet generator (ie it has field coils and armature not magnets and armature) and has not been used in a while then it requires some current to produce voltage. Therefore the test light would be needed to produce voltage(larger is better, brake lamp would be ideal) a digital meter would not make it generate ( an OLD analog meter might draw enough). When one has been used recently residual magnetism will allow it to generate. Hooking voltage to it and running it like a motor should indicate a good generator, and should give you that residual magnetism necessary to generate. Hope this helps. Jon

Vw manual states should produce voltage on its own when testing, but just says bad gen if no volts. Don't saybruses etc

Where is your regulator located? Is it possible a faulty wire or connector between the gen and reg exists? If the gen runs like a motor it should generate. Its basically a permanent magnet motor. Is the generator painted? Has it got a good electrical ground?

He is testing right off gen.it seems like gen is not making ground to car.try that polarization again w one wire. Leave battery cables on battery, grnd df to case, run a piece of wire from batr pos to d+ And see if spins

I took my nasty old generator from my nasty old engine and put it on my bench. Grounded DF to case...Hooked DVOM, - to ground, + to D+. Hand spun it. WIth just a hand spin, she shows .08 volts. The generator on the car wont even do that. I think I have my culprit.

I replaced the "broken" ones and everything came back to live with a nice voltage to the regulator........
