About to install my new engine tomorrow and was wondering what the clutch disk thickness is supposed to be. I know my disk is used, but Id like to salvage as much as possible (seeing how I just had to buy another engine!)

According to the Clymer VW Beetle shop manual for 1961-1979, the thickness of the disc should be at least 0.36 in.

Scott,
The minimum thickness above the rivet heads on the clutch friction disk should be 1/16".
Another easy check is to try and slip a 7mm open end wrench over the edge of the disc. If it slips over easily the disc should be replaced.
