After I pulled my rear main seal tonight I did some reading as to what ruins rear mains and I read about end play.....so with my flywheel removed, I can yank on the pulley back and forth and the crank moves about .030 inside the case. Am I doing this test wrong or is this engine just a boat weight?

Yes you are doing it wrong. Endplay is checked with the flywheel on and torqued.
Install the 3 shims you have in there already. Inst flywheel [no seal] pull the crank from the flywheel end first then zero the dial. If you don't have a dial you can bolt a piece of metal to the case so it just touches the front of the flywheel. Pull the crank from the pulley then measure the gap with a feeler gauge.

Its official. My engine cases are trash. I tore it apart last night and the entire main bearing seating surface has a nice groove dug in it which lets the bng move back and forth almost .030. What a crushing discovery. Im committed to geting this car to move under its own power, so Ive located a rebuild for 450 bucks. Im may have to sell a friggen kidney, but I will finish this abomination.
