I decided to pull the fan housing tonight because I saw some evidence of mice nests and I didnt want any fires....holy crow, you should have seen the mess inside. The ENTIRE fan housing was PACKED with insulation and seeds. It took me the better part of 3 hours to pick it all out. The oil cooler had an entire sheet of cloth stuck to it. This stuff was packed in there good too, some of it was almost as dense as cardboard. d**n mice know how to build a house.
Once I got that over with, I proceeded to look for my oil leak. The entire bottom of the engine is caked in oil, from the case to the heads. I pulled the pushrod tubes but the leak really seems to be from the base of the jugs and the head gaskets. It was tough to tell because I was scraping away several MM's of oil, dirt, leaves and assorted bugs, mud wasp nests and other nastiness. Im really debating pulling the heads and jugs but I dont want any more complications.
So I decided to pull the plugs and look for any oil fouling....the driver rear plug looked a little different..then I realized....It was wearing a collar....a repair collar. Some a$$hat stripped the head and drilled a spark plug repair insert into it. however, the insert was stuck to the plug and not the head. And its crooked.
EVERYTHING I touch on this car is broken. So, this I ask.....If I pull the jugs, how do I reinstall the jugs over fresh rings? There must be some sort of ring compressor for this. Can I buy just rings and base gaskets? Secondly, is it worth it? This engine seems so thrashed that I may as well just slap it together and hope for the best, Im not putting any more money into it.
