Well I FINALLY got her up on jackstands last night for a good look. I figured out why the previous owner fiberglassed the entire tub....one of the pans is completely gone and replaced with sheet metal and the other has several large holes. Everything has been stuffed full of fiberglass. I had to be real careful where I lifted her up from. The outer frame rails show some corrosion but I didnt see any perforation. I may have to reinforce the seat rails from underneath but Ill let the rest of it go as this is my 500 dollar project car. What REALLY freaked me out was the pedal cluster. The gas pedal and brake pedal were totally frozen up and covered in 44 years of crap, dirt, leaves and sand. I had to scrape away about 2 inches of junk that the previous owned just spray painted over. Turns out there is a brake line down there too... It took me almost 2 hours to remove the whole assembly. I broke the pin that goes thru the accel pedal and the housing that holds the accel linkage pin. ITs soaking in gasoline now as a back up part and Ive located a replacement on ebay. So, where is the brake switch located on this car? Is it a sensor on the master cylinder? NOTHING on my car has been wired up and its a total rats nest. Id like to make sure I get the proper replacement.

The master cylinder carries at least one switch for the stop lights

I am not sure of where the brake switch is, I kinda remember it being on the master cylinder, but I really don't remember. I do know that all of the mechanical stuff is straight volkswagen. You may want to check on www.thesamba.com Or you could get a clymer or haynes or any number of other volkswagen repair manuals for your year of chassis. Hope this helps, and I hope that I haven't had too much to drink before offering any advice ( it has happened once or twice.)

Depending on the year, there will be 1 or 2 brake light switches on the master cylinder itself. If it is two then they are for each circuit and the brake warning idicator. They will be two or three prong. The three prong is for the indicator light. The two are for just the brake light switches. I usually only use one and leave the other as a back up since they are prone to failure. You can see them in this picture. Coming out of the bottom of the master cylinder:

jspbtown- pardon the off topic question: The diamond plate- what metal is it and how is it fastened?

It is 3/16" aluminum and is attached by 3/16" rivets. The rails are 1"x2"
Strong as all heck.
