Yes...without the regulator you will run way to many volts through the syetm. You can fry opoints/ comdensor (or electronic ignition systems), the coil would overheat, and lights could pop.

Alternator/generator swap just a bolt on operation? Ill probably keep the generator until Ive got it running. Ill ask the stupid question.....without the regulator hooked up, can I damage the ignition system or does it just protect the accessories? Without the regulator it will not charge. It will do no damage other than your battery will eventually die {unless you full field the alt/gen by bypassing the regulator. In this case it will overcharge, boil the battery and damage any and all electronics {if run for an extended period of time} and blow lights etc.

generators aren't worth a crap anyway... you can run headlights OR a stereo, I had a modest amp in mine originally and the headlights barely ran with the stereo on. Alternator swap fixed that in a jiffy.
