so, i'm waiting to figure out what type of glass to put into the back window (1st picturer) i've formed. i really like the look. i want to go with plexiglass, but glass shops say thats illegal, but even for antique show cars i'm not so sure. anyway, while waiting to get that straight, i'm jumping into the hotly contested gull wing doors. i like the look of the all plexi, but seems too flimsy and hard to replace. i'm LUCKY that a second set came with my car. this has been on my list, so here goes: i'm using the actual plexiglass gull as my mold. i know i'm not doing it right, but i'm gonna make it work. 2 layers of glass to start another view. next step is to build up with 3/16 plywood. fiberglass is messy but also really cool if you get it to work. here, i've trimmed and doing a test fit. its really smooth... more later... big bob

Bob, From what I understand as long as the frame for the glass is removable, it is considered a convertable and plexi or lexan can be legally used (one reason I made my back window cowl removable). That is why plexi can be used as the GT gull wing doors. I had a fiberglass hardtop on my MGB and both the rear window and quarter windows were plexi. I'm not sure what the rules are when the window frame is part of the main body.
I'm about to undertake my second attempt at fiberglass doors myself. What you are doing is looking good as far as I can tell.
Sincerely,

steven, that's the kind of info i need about how to make that back window work!!!
can you clarify about the frame. the current plexi gull wings dont have a frame. what if i modify the rubber channel and make it permanent but open the front of the rubber channel so the window slips in and is held in place by several clips from the inside?
or maybe i have to fix the rubber channel to the window and then make that attachable with clips??
for the question about the cloth, i did 2 layers, first mat, then cloth. you need to check with skip20, if you see his work, you'll know he's the expert...

Bob, The gulls are okay cuz they themselves are removable. I'm not sure how they define removable (theoretically everything is removable), it is either tied to time or whether tools are needed (I think the DOT regs are on the net somewhere- haven't had a chance to search recently- I had an hardcopy in the 80's when I was building a trailer and remember being sidetracked reading about removable tops at that time). I think that if the rear window cowl or frame or if the window itself is "designed" to be removable, it is okay, however, it would probably be best to find the regs so you can cite rule and paragraph number if it ever comes up. Sincerely,

If it's flat, just get some safety glass cut to fit. Sure would like to see pictures & how to on that rear window setup! so, i'm waiting to figure out what type of glass to put into the back window (1st picturer) i've formed. i really like the look. i want to go with plexiglass, but glass shops say thats illegal, but even for antique show cars i'm not so sure. anyway, while waiting to get that straight, i'm jumping into the hotly contested gull wing doors. i like the look of the all plexi, but seems too flimsy and hard to replace. i'm LUCKY that a second set came with my car. this has been on my list, so here goes: i'm using the actual plexiglass gull as my mold. i know i'm not doing it right, but i'm gonna make it work. 2 layers of glass to start another view. next step is to build up with 3/16 plywood. fiberglass is messy but also really cool if you get it to work. here, i've trimmed and doing a test fit. its really smooth... more later... big bob

Top cover looks good. Did you roll it out? I see air bubbles (white spots) makes it weak! Mat adds thickest & clothe adds strength. You could add 1/2" x 1/2' tubing as framing. Easy to bend carefully to shape, add putty ( see my post) with rounded inside corner before glassing. Be sure to off set it for the rubber seal. Keep the pictures coming as my friend is thinking of doing something like that for her GT.

hey skip, where do i get a roller or a substitute? i did the inside of the gullwing as the mold wanting to draw the radius tighter and not having to make a second mold from the outside, but lets just say i have some issues with it. please give your condensed "how to" on this mod. you can pm or email me. or give me first 3 steps, then ill post that work. many thanks. BTW, i will be building a frame of sorts to support a lower window but thats down the road.. big bob Top cover looks good. Did you roll it out? I see air bubbles (white spots) makes it weak! as far as the back glass why would you want plexi? it scratches warps ect. as far as legal its called officer discretion,or depends who you meet and their attitude, ive had one person tell me it cant be done anything in general from titles to tint. then I come back and the next person says something completely different.usually you have to get the right form and some kinda boss involved.lol asfar as the back glass I would have flat glass cut (safety glass with the laminate like a windshield costs the glassguy $100 for a 4X8 sheet pluss the time to cut it,and usually it takes 2 tries even for a pro so $50 to$100 should get it cut and installed(my buddy is a glassman in texas) he hand cut a new windshield for my jeep cj for 100 installed with my gasket. best of luck..
