New GT II owner. Does anyone have any towing experience with one of those two wheeled car dolly's? Is clearance an issue? Any potential damage to the trans axle for long tows? Thank you!

I towed mine on a dolly from central ohio to virgina with no problems just made sure it was out of gear checked it every so often to make sure it was still tied down and out of gear. If yours is an automatic you have other things to so such as un-hooking the axles(you will burn up the auto trans if you don;t)

Tie the steering straight and tow it backwards.

The GTII nose is too long to tow backwards unless you have an offset/lowered hitch. (And while you did not ask, the standard towing bar for a Bug does not clear the nose.)
If it is an IRS, then using the proper torx-type head wrench you can remove the rear axles easily. The wheels will likely toe-inwards but it will still work. If it is a swing-arm model, detaching the axle will cause the transmission fluid to pour all over the place. Messy.
I towed mine with a rented full body car carrier. (Whew, at 75mph I got about 4 miles-per-gallon towing with a GMC Suburban.)

U haul charges about $200.00 to rent an aluminum car trailer, they let you keep it for 3-4 days and you can return it to a different location than the rental. I used it to pick up my GT2 and it was a piece of cake. I pulled it with my Chevy Astro no problem!

Good of you to point that out!
I called U-Haul to find if I could get a car trailer that would fit something 14" or so longer than a VW bug and they came up with a total, killer good deal. Same as yours. In fact, U-Haul found a trailer just 40 miles from my destination, and totally on the route that I was going.
Excellent experience. And overall CHEAP! You see, U-Haul is using interstate trucking metrics. I can explain that if you want: in the meantime, just enjoy.

Towed my GT2 home on a two wheel dolly from U-haul about 1 Hour 30 Minute trip one way with the car on. I noticed that the front fender flare area would bump / rub if I turned sharp corners! Reason being that the ramp section that the front tires were strapped to has a certin degree of SWIVLE (left to right) to it. I did notice some light rubbing by the time the trip was complete. Not a big problem with mine since the paint is scuffed up.
