I bought myself a Bradley GT a few months back that had been in indoor storage since the 70's. Entire vehicle has less than 2K original miles and it came with most everything from what I can tell. I picked it up for $1,800 which, from what I can tell, is a steal. Body is in great condition but needs a paint job. Interior leather is dusty but in good shape for the most part - will need some love. Carpeting is all gone so I'll need to get some installed. Shifter bushing is also pretty dead but will still put the car into gear. Also took me some time but I have her running now. I did a custom wiring harness from scratch and replaced the ignition system with an MSD system. Engine is a 1600cc dual port and boy does she sing... when there's not gravel filling every inch of the fuel lines that is. I'm still not sure how that ended up there, but I've replaced the lines and flushed the fuel tank multiple times. It's now sitting with a 50/50 mix of seafoam and 93 octane. I'm on my fourth fuel pump too. First one leaked into the block. Second one still leaked into the block, so I went electric. That one died because of the gravel. Now I've got another electric with a built in limiter. The oil is now flushed multiple times and replaced with high zinc synthetic oil. The carb was unfortunately quite dead as it sat with fuel in it, so I've got a Chinese carb until I convert to either a dual big carb or fuel injection. Heads are also replaced with EMPI heads, which seem to work fantastic. I lashed the valves to 4 instead of 6 per the advice of my local air-cooled guru that I was lucky enough to meet. These heads will eventually be replaced with something better but will certainly do the trick for the time being. My next steps mechanically are going to be having the transmission re-geared or installing a re-geared 5-spd off of a Porsche 356 along with a Porsche 977 rear suspension arm for adjustable camber, as well as a full disc brake conversion. I'm running a custom 5-lug drum brake setup right now with some pretty cool wire wheels, but I really want to get away from those drum brakes. I also need to fix the swing axle to IRS conversion as it was not done very well. The pan is, from what I'm told, a '63 and the engine is a '73. Right now it runs and drives pretty fantastic, but I may need to replace the fuel tank, which is a large metal box mounted above the transaxle and I am really not going to look forward to replacing it if it comes down to it. But, until then, it runs and drives pretty fantastic! Shipping in right now are new tail light and headlights with housings, which I needed to purchase to pass WI state inspection... That's a whole story, which I have some questions about, but more on that later.
Of the things that still need fixing that are unique to the Bradley GT, one of the doors is broken and missing a chunk, so it's missing part of the hinge, but it has both latches and the spring-loaded handle. The other door has the latches but no handle, and neither door has any of the supporting arms to hold the doors open. The door seals are also completely rotted. If anyone has any information on where to get or how to make any of these, that would be greatly appreciated!
Another issue is that my front windshield seal is also rotting and the trim is falling out. I'm trying to go chrome-less with my build so I'm eventually going to remove the chrome trim to either paint or powder coat it black. Does anyone have any information on how to properly install the windshield? Unfortunately my windshield has a couple of small cracks on side, so I'm hoping that I can take it somewhere while I have it out to have it repaired as the damage is quite small.
My last two issues are somewhat connected, but I'll touch on the easy one first. Exterior lighting. Partially due to the issue that I'm going to touch on next, and partially due to a few of my current light housings not functioning even with new bulbs, I decided to replace all of the exterior lighting on my Bradley. The tail lights were pretty easy to find as they're just 4" round lights which are used on box trucks, semi trailers, and most other trailers. Even campers use them, so finding these was pretty easy. After some searching I was even able to find ones with integrated reverse lights, which I needed to get. I also selected a third brake light bar to go in my rear windshield somewhere. I'm not really sure how or where I'm going to install it, but I need one nonetheless. The headlights I will be ordering soon, but I have some picked out that I believe will fit. They're 7" round headlamps. All of the lights are LED or CCFL lights or a combination and will look very sleek. My Bradley is unique in that it has front turn signals molded into the body. Unfortunately one of them is dead, and the housing isn't so much a housing but quite literally part of the body. I'd like to replace the lamp with an LED so that I can, at the very least, worry less about these dying as they're not sealed with anything more than a strip of rubber that goes along the inside of the recess for the turn amber signal cover. Additionally, one of the covers is cracked. I'm not sure what caused it, but I believe that the plastic has become brittle due to it's age. Does anyone know either where I can find a replacement or if there is a place that would make short run custom lamps? I'd be willing to drop a pretty penny to have something custom made. If I can't find anything, I'll probably end up using glue to repair the cover, but I'd prefer not to have to rely on glue if I don't have to.
The last issue is what initially drove the search for new lights. My Bradley is titled in Michigan as a 1963 Volkswagen with no model listed and the engine number listed as the VIN. I'm trying to register in WI as a hobbyist vehicle. The issue that I'm running into is that the state trooper that I've been assigned won't let me register as a replica and just transfer the title and be done with it (I'm aware that a Bradley GT isn't truly a replica of anything); he's requiring that I register as either a street modified or custom built vehicle, and he's treating the vehicle as if I build it in 2021. In other words, I either need to find a VIN stamped on the pan and then conform to all 2021 safety standards except air bags, or if I can't find a VIN that I conform to all 2021 safety standards including air bags. Needless to say a Bradley GT will never have air bags, so I am trying to find a VIN. I believe there is a VIN stamped on the pan in front of the shifter bushing access panel, but my entire pan is coated in some sort of hardened putty to, at least I presume, prevent corrosion. The other issues that I run into is that I need powered defrosters, at least 3-point seatbelts, a minimum of 2 mirrors, a third brake light, and reverse lights. There are other requirements, but from what I can tell, these are the only ones that I currently don't conform to. The powered defrosters I am thinking of using Noctua computer fans and wiring to PWM to a switch or dial and attaching the fans to the current speed-driven vents that funnel air from the outside of the car. I'm planning on having a roll-cage installed to reinforce the frame and add some safety to the car, which would also allow me to install harnesses, which would meet the minimum of 3-point requirement for seatbelts. The mirrors are simple and I found some that I like, I just need to mount them now. The third brake light I ordered with the rest of the tail lights, and the reverse lights are integrated in the tail lights. I don't however have a reverse gear lockout or reverse sensor for the reverse lights. Currently I'm thinking of just putting a switch on the dash, but if anyone has any ideas, I'd prefer to do a proper reverse sensor. As far as registration, does anyone else have any experience with title transfers along this line? Does anyone have any advice?
