I have a disability that has, for the time being, prevented me from being able to fully check out the condition of my "new" GTII underneath like I plan to. I can tell that there are some issues with the floor though. It appears that there may have been some floor pan replaced over top of existing metal. Not sure though. I'm wondering about what to choose as replacements when the time comes. Should I buy complete right and left halves like I always have in years gone by for bugs and just remove and discard the seat tracks? Or replace with heavy gauge metal from the local metal shop, since the seat tracks are not needed? Thanks.

I have a GT, but I like my seat racks. Gives me room to slide under the dash when I need too and be able to reach the petals correctly.

A GT1 might use the original seat tracks for adjustment, I don't know, but GTIIs use their own tracks, that are "part of" the seats. I'm thinking that if I use flat metal from the metal shop I might be able to build in a little drop that would give me a little more head room that I need. This weekend I plan to get the car up on some blocks/stands so I can get underneath and check it out a lot better.

Dropped floors will give significantly more headroom. You can cut out the old, create cardboard templates of a drop pan and have them fabricated. Its not complex, but is ain't easy
Floor replacement with the body on is a challenge

I'm 6' tall & I have plenty of headroom (at least 3-4") in my GT2 stock floors, stock seats & rails.

as far as gauges & bezels I've seen them come up but like JSP says not that often - patience & perseverance always pays off! Check the FB sights & Samba as well as Craigslist

I was able to get a better look underneath my car today, for the first time. It's not as bad as I thought. There are some pinholes and some points of light shining through. One thing that I'm still confused about is the driver's side though. A couple of spots appear to be two layers, separating. Maybe a previous owner "capped" a new floor pan over an original floor pan? I still think I will remove the body to do a complete brake overhaul and restoration on the chassis. I will be able to tell more about the floors when the body is off.

Sounds like a plan. Good luck and have fun.

Body off is THE best way to do any real level of restoration. Plus it gives you access to the wiring which I can assure you will be terrible.

My decision has been made. Due to the condition, not so bad but still needing some repairs, and me needing a little more head room, I will drop the floors 2". They will be smooth, heavy gauge metal, with some cross bracing in front of and behind the seat rails. I have a little more difficulty than some getting in and out of low cars because of a handicap that prevents me from sliding in feet first. I find it necessary to sit down first then swing my feet in. Not easy to do in a sports car! The lowered floors will help and possibly make it possible for me to slide in feet first. I would rather lower the floors than lift the body because I don't want any more clearance between the tires and the fenders.

Certainly not a bad choice but adjusting the VW suspension is a relatively easy process.
