Hello again everybody, about a year and a half ago I pulled a GT out of an old barn, joined the group, bought Troy's CD, and then promptly got busy on something else... HA! Ain't that life! Anyway I finally got it in the garage to begin the process of a body off restoration. I'll keep this thread updated and you can follow the photo journal on this page of my site jerryriggin.com/?page_id=221 I purchased the car pretty much sight unseen, the owner at the time didn't know a thing about it except that it had been sitting in the barn for about 32 years. The body had no major damage, the interior was majorly trashed with foam bits everywhere from mice making it their home. I found the motor spun ok and all major parts were there so I handed over the money, put it on the trailer and hauled it home. I might mention that this project is for the fun of it, I own a corvette that's fast and fun to drive, but I spent a good part of my life in the Navy in San Diego working on and driving Meyers Tow'd and Manx buggies, guess I'm at that age where I want to relive a little of the past without the divorce and hangovers. And so the fun begins.... Jerry jerryriggin.com/?page_id=221

Oh my god, what have I gotten myself into? Finally have the body off, that was fun... Now doing inventory of parts needed, guess the first thing will be the floor pans, I'm in Minnesota so wondering where's the best place to order those from? I've discovered it has a 70' pan and a 69' 1500cc motor, biggest surprise of all is that it has a dual range automatic trans with a electric clutch for low/hi ratios, wondering if I should ditch that for a 4 speed? Looks like the kind of thing that will be a pain to deal with come reassembly time, extra wiring, hydraulic lines, some sort of electrically controlled vacuum gizmo, 2 fender mounted fluid tanks, and a pump mounted off the crank, don't remember any of that stuff on any of the Manx's I drove back in the day... Progress pics can be seen here... jerryriggin.com/?page_id=221TIA!

Well, that's one way of getting the body off. Good job.

For the floor pans you could try here: www.goodcarmaautorepair.com/They told me a while back they had a source "in-town" and could get them in a couple of days.

Thanks 20niner for the info... On a side note to all... I, for whatever reason the other night decided that I wanted to hear the motor run before I went too much further and spent a lot of money on this joy ride. Keeping in mind this thing hasn't been run for at least 30 years I vacuumed out all of the mice nest's, especially the mess that was in the throat of the carb, checked the oil, pulled the plugs which looked brand new but were gaped wrong, pulled the dist cap to check that the timing was at least close and that's where I found what might have put this thing in the shed all those years ago. With number 1 piston at TDC the dist was closer to firing number 4 instead, so I went to loosen up the dist clamp and whalla!, the nut was stripped which allowed the dist to spin itself out of time. Fixed that little problem, set the timing to "close enuff" and adjusted the point gap, hot wired the coil, poured some fuel into the float bowl, set it to fast idle on choke and after cranking for about 15 seconds the d**n thing fired right off and sat there and idled like it was brand new till the bowl ran out of gas.. I've always said the V-Dub motor was an amazing piece of engineering for it's time!! jerryriggin.com/?page_id=221

Skip20, you need to get yourself a Bobcat and rig it up with some forks. It looks like you will need a little chain and rope, too. If I tried that, I would have destroyed the fiberglass body AND the garage door!
comptrmedic, How tall are you? Some of us have raised the body and/or lowered the floor pans. For us tall guys (6'-2") we need all the headroom that we can get.

TexasIceMan: at 5'5" I don't have headroom problems, if anything the seats will be a problem in that they're too tall, makes them kind of uncomfortable. Ordered new full floor pans last night, once I get those in I'll figure out the seat issue. Has anybody in the group changed out the seats before? What did you use or what will fit? Thanks... jerryriggin.com/?page_id=221

Where did you end up ordering floor pans from? Do a search in you town. Have a VW part store for old bugs here in Knoxville & a VW speed Shop 30 miles away. They both stock floor for $98.00 each.

It looks like you got as much done in one years time as I did in 5. And I like it already... You've got Keystones on her! Are they 14s?
