So my 19 year old son had to have some ankle surgery for a hoop injury and was laid up for 6 weeks with no weight bearing. I figured it was time to pull his old 1998 3000GT into the garage for some work since he couldn't drive.
One window regulator was broken so that was fixed. Then I planned on doing some simple paint work on the front fascia. The prior owner had bumped a few things and scratched the paint off in some places. They then tried to brush on some touch up paint with really poor results. I also noticed that the clear was peeling in places.
Then I saw how the mirrors and rear wing had turned a lovely shade of pink so they got added to the list. I then noticed (I need to stop "noticing" things) that the paint was looking pretty dull. The body was in great shape with zero rust but the paint was getting a little chalky. So I thought I would scuff it a little and shoot some clear.
Well the scuffing got a little aggressive and before I new it I had to re-shoot the whole thing. I primed the front fascia as the sanding went down to the substrate. The rest of the car just got a real good scuffing.
Went to get some Sherwin Williams paint and found out it was $275 per quart....yikes. Off to my local NAPA for some Martin Senour base coat at $70 per quart....MUCH better.
So 3 coats of base, 3 coats of Kirker EC100 clear and it came out OK...for a garage based paint job. Also painted up some satin black trim panels (side scoops, rear window valance, wiper arms, fog light housings, etc). Hopefully he will get 3 more years of college out of it.
