BLUF: (bottom line up front - i got it from the military) What do you guys (and gals) think of the ISIS power distribution system?
Read below for your entertainment and to follow my story of rewiring my Bradley GTE.
So... I figured out the whole wiring scheme and thanks to the great people on this board found out what the converter box was.(for marker lights). But now after figuring out how it "was" wired it is just driving me crazy because there is just way too many wires and they are all in a rats nest here there and everywhere.
Well I was planning on just rewiring it in a much more appropriate and efficient way(for electric vehicles it really is simple), but I was thinking(my wife hates it when I say that!), since I am a computer/electronics geek, why don't I just use a controller to control a MOSFET(pretty much a bank of solid state electronic switches that would sit in a small box between the battery and the electrical components)multiswitch with all of the electric stuff hooked to it. This way I could eliminate a bunch of wiring(the converter box included) and have the capability to PWM each device(can be "dimmed").
I could program any electrical output to do just about anything, based on any input to the controller (switches, sensors, timers). I would control everything from a "carputer" (a little computer running an embedded OS with a touchscreen that would sit in the place of my gauges. I would have a few hidden low power switches that would control everything in case of a catastrophic controller / computer failure.
Well... I took a look around the net to see if there was anything out there that would even remotely meet my needs, and it turns out there are a couple of systems that do almost exactly what I need them to do. MoTeC has some really good stuff out there that would do the trick, but it is several thousand dollars $$$. The other company I found(I^2 Engineering/Littlefuse makes a system called the ISIS(successor of the 1+1) that does just about what I described in the last paragraph for about a thousand dollars. Have any of you guys used it or know anyone that has. What do you think?
