My son and I are 'updating' a Twoie... We need to remove the engine but there is no room to move it off the pins and tranny the normal way. I have never tried removing the tranny before the engine before. Is this possible or does anyone know a way to get the engine out? It's a '77 and there is not 1/4 inch of room between the shroud and the body. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

I defer this question to Skip20, as he has a few GT II's in his workshop and I am sure he has taken engines in and out of them many times. I have a GT1. Having looked into the engine compartment of only a few GTII's I believe that the engine should pull off the pins and drop out the bottom with the exhaust removed to provide for extra space between the rear body and the engine. A proper car jack with a wide base would hold the engine weight while being able to pull the engine away from the transaxle. I don't have one and have not dropped a VW engine from a GT II, so I hope Skip gets online and can answer you in detail.

I was able to pull the engine out with the trans in place. Very tight fit but it came out.

Remove the sheet metal on the back of the engine, in front of you. that should give you the room you need.

Butt sag is a problem that makes it tight in between the shroud and body. What I did is to jack up the rear bumper a bit to gain some wiggle room. But be very careful and go slow , you can rip off bumper mounts if not careful

Yes, it's butt-sag as Steve mentioned.
Try jacking up the rear, putting jack-stands under the shock mounts. Then remove the left wheel. Another jack under the body, very slowly lifting it about 1 inch.
Remove the engine bolts, rock the engine off the trans. Tilt and pull it out the corner where the wheel was removed.
That should do it.
