3rd digit is the year, starting with Aug 64 {65 model year} month gets a little more involved. Keeping this in mind 64 would be 115 xxx xxx as well as 75 being 115 x xxx xxx. Notice the 75 has an extra digit. This started in June 69. According to www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/bugchassisdating.php 113 2 824 333, 11 indicates a Beetle sedan, 3 indicates it is a 1973, 2 is a placeholder, 824 333 car produced that model year. It was made some time between May 2 and May 31. The #produced resets to zero on Aug 1.

WHAT's a placeholder ? I probably used the wrong term but it is an added digit to lengthen the serial number so same numbers are not reused.
