was looking at a car on line and the person told me that the reverse didn't work because the person he bought the car off of took a plate off so he didn't hit reverse when he shifted fast. Is this possible I've never heard of this before. If this is right how much trouble is it to fix. He said all other gears shift great and will not jump out of gear.
Thanks

removing the plate would make grabbing reverse extremely easy when going for second, not stopping reverse from engaging. Most likely the reverse idler is trashed. On a swing axle the gear can be flipped to utilize the other side as it does not fully engage.

Thanks Dan, Not sure what the reverse idler is. I looked in my Workshop manual and it shows all the transmission parts inside but nothing on the reverse idler where is it located?
Thanks jspbtown, I seen that part and wondered if that was what the guy that has the car was talking about.

The tranny does not come apart in a logical, obvious sequence. The input shaft and differential has to be removed first then the bolts inside the diff housing are removed. A small scissor jack can then be slipped into the housing to press on the pinion gear.

Don't you love the Germans putting the numbers anywhere the want! Figured 48 would be next to 47 & 49, then the fork for it is 57? But yes the trans is easy to fix, was trained blind folded on the other VW trans, starts with a "P" I think.

Forks and related parts are in the fifties because fork and fifty start with the letter F. Alphanumeric association to find parts quicker. LOL

I have the same diagram of the transmission. Just wasn't sure to tackle it yet. But I like the feed back I get here. I know I have to get my fingers greasy it won't fix it's self.
Thanks Ken
