The VIN is the one that was put on by Volkswagon. Though the thread at the following link is talking about the GT2, the VIN number location applies to the GT1 and if you scroll down a bit you will see a picture of the VIN location near the transaxle nose cone access plate. bradleygt.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=ads&thread=1190&page=1Bradley assigned numbers to their bodies, but there does not seem be be any logic to how they were arrived at. It does not matter greatly though, since registration is tied to the original VW VIN. Hope this helps. Warmest Regards.....

I went and looked last night and my GT1 doesn't have a VIN location near the transaxle nose cone access plate. Where else could I look?

All type 1 VW chassis have the VIN location near the transaxle nose cone access plate. If it is not there than the VIN has been filled in, or welded over. There is no other location for the VIN. I had to discard a good chassis because the fellow I bought the VW from, had cut through the VIN to try to remove the shift tube. The state of Ohio would not let me reuse the chassis for my bradley. Check on the middle of the tunnel behind where the seats would be. Under any carpet or sound deadening material. You will find the numbers next to the removable access to the trans axle tunnel. I had to clean a lot of tar, glue and paint coating off mine to find it. As others have stated here, that is the VW VIN.
