I just read a post where a clutch cable broke and to get it going from a stop it was slammed into gear.
DO NOT DO THIS.
All it does is bends the shift forks in the trans and grinds the teeth on the gears.
By VW omitting a key safety feature, the neutral safety switch, situations like this are easily overcome with a minimum of damage.
When the clutch fails to disengage and you are stopping, 1 shift to neutral and coast to a stop. 2 When stopped turn the engine off. 3 select 1st gear 4 when safe to proceed start the engine 5 upshifting and downshifting can be done without a clutch if the vehichle is neither accelerating or decellerating, no load on the gears , and engine speed is matched to trans speed. 6 avoid downshifting to 1st as many VW trans do not have a 1st gear syncho. 7 when approaching a stop go back to step 1
Shifting with no clutch. 1 match engine speed to trans 2 shift to neutral 3 match engine speed {increase rpm when downshifting, decrease when upshifting} engage next gear. When the speeds match, the shifter will be smooth, effortless with no resistance or grinding.
Everyone should practice this, in a safe location, before you need to use it.

Hi Dan, Tried that first, but it wouldn't start in gear. Too much compression and warm engine. Wouldn't turn over fast enough to start with the extra load. So.....had to go to plan B. Gary Hammond,
