Folks: I have a GTI based on a 66 vw. Runs fine at speed but at times will stall completely when I come to a stop. At other times will idle fine. Does not seem to be related to whether the car is warmed up or not. Anyone have any suggestions as to what may be going on? I am thinkink about just getting a new carburetor - which brings me to my second question. Between my carburetor and the manifold there is what i can only describe as a spacer - it raises the carb. about an inch above the manifold and i can't for the life of me figure out why. Any thoughts on what purpose it may serve (judging by some of the strange things i've found on this car it may serve no purpose whatsoever) If i relplace the carb. i'd like to take it out- any thoughts and does anyone have any suggestions for a good replacement carb. that will give me a little more hp without haveing to spend $500 or $600 for one of the real high end units. Thanks for your help. Pat in Buffalo

When was the last time you did a complete tune up, valve adjustment, dwell and timing? What dist are you using. is it 009-svda-dvda-vac adv only? What carb do you have? What size engine? Pics would help.
The spacer can be for a few things 1 allows the carb for a generator equipped engine to be used on an alternator engine. 2 adapter for different size carb 3 part of the smog setup

"1 allows the carb for a generator equipped engine to be used on an alternator engine."
Yep, had to put a spacer in my VW Bus to use the alternator.

Hey all thanks for your responses but i'm afaid your going to have to dumb it down a little bit. The last time i really worked on a VW was about 30 years ago and i was just a backyard mechanic then. Dan last tune up probably last summer but no real miles on since then. I doubt a valve adjustment. dwell or timing were done. No idea what distributor it was -actually now that i think about it it was one of those colored ones from jc whitney. I believe the engine is 1500cc if i'm thinking right but not really sure why i say that. as to the spacer how do i tell if i have a generator or an alternator? I don't believe it's for a different size carb as the holes line up exactly and i'd be suprised in this car if it were a smog set up. Lastly i have no idea how to upload a picture onto this site but if someone can give me a few pointers i'll give it a try. lastly jspbtown what is a "clean set of kads" Thanks to all for the help and interest. Pat

You need to post the pics to a site like photobucket. Or if you want to email them to me at jspbtown"AT"aol.com I can post them. Kads are kadrons or 40mm Solex carbs. They are the standard for initial upgrades. Think of "Holley to small block Chevy" and "Kadron to VW" as the same type analogy. They work on the smaller (1600cc to maybe 1915cc) VW motors. Alternators have large round fronts. Generators are smaller. Generators: Alternators: Spacer: www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=ACC%2DC10%2D5509

jspbtown: Thanks the pictures help. I might be able to figure out photobucket and will try uploading over the weekend. In looking at the pictures i'm sure i have a generator and the spacer looks nothing like the link posted. I like the idea of Kads but is there a lot more aggrevation with two carbs and hooking the linkage etc. up?
