Okay I was talking to a long time german mechanic in the area. I don't remember the exact size but he said he is a friend that has a complete gene berg motor somewhere around 2200 to 2300 cc about 200 horsepower. my question is is a motor of that size going to lack dependability will its life be short lived as daily driver? or does anybody have any better ideas to spending 2-3 grand on making a faster? am I better off turboing a stock motor etc

Thanks I knew about the site. he said the motor is worth about 5 grand and I could get it for about 3. but I am not real familiar with these beetle engines so I don't want to waste my money if this engine is only good for a few passes down the track. this is a daily driver.

From what I know about VW engines and have read about them in Bradleys, 200hp is right at the top end of the power/dependability compromise. As Wyn said, it will largely depend on self-control at the gas pedal. Probably will have clutch & transaxle problems before engine problems. Warmest....

And don't forget that when you start cranking out so much HP from a normally aspirated VW engine you start getting into some wild cams and such. You may lose some idle qualities.

Not to mention you will be buying tires more often. I mean come on, You have a 200hp engine on a car weighing 1/4 the weight of my car trailer... You just gotta put those hybrids in their place, lol

My dilemma here is I originally wanted to have a spare motor in case mine ever go in the middle of summer but for the price I can get this motor 4 as opposed to a stock motor it sounds like it maybe worth it. I don't mind putting a brand new tranny and disc brakes on the car with next year's tax return what I wanted to know if I'm not always pounding on it will it last. and it would be nice for those times of people saying oh that's just a beetle motor

Mine has a 2180 with about 500+ miles on. It has a stroker crank and mod cam set-up and my concerns were the same as yours, how long will this last as a daily driver. The first part of the advice that you got was good, don't put your foot in it. I was told by the mechanic who rebuilt it to set the valves at .016 another mechanic who I've grown to like said no-way set them at .006. He also said to use Brad Penn racing oil straight 30. I'll probably do that also. I've gotten over the amazement of how fast it is out of the gate and am now driving it for longevity and using and enjoying all that torque and power when I am up at highway speeds but still not punching it. I'm probably going to pull the engine at 1000 miles and torque the heads and whatever else I can get to. I'll keep you posted as I get more miles on it.
