My brother has a ready to bolt in VW bus motor sitting in his garage needing a happy home. Any chance it will fit in the GT without major modifications? Has anyone tried this before?

It will fit and has been done. Ideally you will need to fabricate a rear engine support.

If it is a type 4 bus motor you will need the flywheel off of a carbed type 4 engine 72/73 [all others are too big] and don't forget the pilot bearing has to be removed from the crank. The center hole of the flywheel gets machined to allow a new pilot bearing to be pressed into it. Without this mod there is nothing supporting the tranny input shaft. New 200mm conversion flywheels are available at cip1 and kennedy engineering. Read this. www.tunacan.net/t4/tech/flywheel.htm
