Trying to get alternator charging. Do I need the dash light to get it charging or should I be wiring a resistor in line from the df+ to the coil? Confused, please help. Thanks

Incandescent lamp is needed for the alternator. Run a wire from the run terminal on the key to the lamp and another wire from the lamp to the tab on the alternator (not the lug...the tab).

The dash lamp wired in series as jsptown indicated is the most common way to provide the "exciter" voltage for the alternator (& at the same time provide visual clue as to its operation). Can also run wire from "+" side of coil, but it requires an in line diode. Warmest,

I use an incandescent lamp wired from + side of coil to exciter tab so the "idiot light" is on the engine right over the alternator. I'm using digital gauges with a voltmeter and have no room for a light. The lamp in back tells me if its charging when tinkering on the engine.

Everything is working fine now with all of your help. Replaced the ammeter with voltmeter and added a light to the dash. On with initial start and goes off with a rev of the engine. Not convinced the alt is charging as voltmeter reads about 13 v at 1800-2000 rpms. We will see. THANKS!!!!!

Sounds like its wired correctly at least. One suggestion would be to check your belt tension. It may be too loose and slipping.
