Has anyone been in contact with his family to see if they plan to keep and continue his masterful good work, or undecided as to how they want to move forward as of now? I would hate to think his unfinished projects will end up in a heap somewhere. there is far too mush into them to just let them slip into the archives.

Hello kdash. What part of Michigan are you located? I know there are a few of us in the state, I'm near Kalamazoo, there are acouple people on the east side of the state near Detroit, one by battle creek, and a couple north of Grand Rapids. If you are able to attend, you can meet a lot of great contacts here for VW parts, and they have a swap meet area, also new parts vendors sometimes show up.

about 9 years back, I backed my pickup up an incline to the back house door to unload some cabinets, (parked on ice in the winter)locked and shut the door, and popped out of gear(5speed) and started rolling towards my dads f150 4x4... ran in front of the truck pushing against it to stop it, almost did when i slipped on the ice... ran over my knee with front and back tires, and missed the other truck by less than 6 inches... hobbled down got in my truck, moved it back, blocked the wheel this time and left door unlocked... knee was wet, went to take a look in the bathroom, the skin was torn off to the cartelage and bone... severed my nerve endings so didnt have any feeling in that knee for nearly 6 years.

Yes, jspbtown is correct, the stock master should be good, but check the fluid levels, and line fittings for the first couple days of use. and when bleeding the brakes, watch the fluid level when you have someone stepping on the pedal

You may need to upgrade the brake lines to the front to a stronger line quality (braided Stainless steel lines???) The calipers require LESS pressure than drum, and if you still have drum in the rear, you will still have to apply enough pressure to stop the rear... With old/stock lines in the front, the PSI will be increased from lower psi required, so its possible you will blow the front lines... I'll try to create an example.

Older cars have more fluid to the Drive wheels to stop the power from going to the wheels, where as more modern cars have the front as the primary braking to provide a more stable/predictable brake... If you look at a master cylinder on a newer car, the front lines have a bigger bore/lines to provide the majority of the stopping force to the front, and a smaller bore/lines to the rear. When ours were made, they were either about equal all the way around or setup for the primary stopping at the rear as that is where the power comes from. (thats why in the diagram I made the rear lines like ==== vs ----, to show where the majority of the fluid goes)
Don't get me wrong, the disk are great, but you will lock up the front while the rear is still spinning if you just hit the brakes without expecting it. The front end is light enough there isn't really enough down force to keep the wheels solid on the road, so when you step on the brakes, yes they will work - too well. the front may lock up stopping and the front will just skid while you apply more pressure to stop the rear.
My suggestion would be to also get the rear converted over as soon as you can WITH the parking brake setup (there are cheaper rear setups w/o parking brake(e-brake) but you will be glad that you still have it), then you will have the stopping ability you expect, with a lot less worry and effort trying to stop.
I currently have disk in rear and drum in front with new lines all the way around... why? so the rear is the primary stopping as there is the down force needed to stop, and drums in front to keep weight up front to keep the wheels from skidding. Yes I have locked up and skidded with this setup as well just from trying to see what a 75-0 would be like, but I had a safe place to try the handling out, and see what different speeds and stopping conditions (wet is still SCARY) are like. I have had a lot of problems with brakes in the past, and from trial and error, and what others passed on to me, I am trying to give you the best info I can.
Don't let this scare you, I wrote this to give you a heads up as to what might happen and ask you to PLEASE take it easy and get use to how this setup feels so you know your car. If it does actup, or not what you are looking for, go over the lines, look into rear disk, and talk to the older guys at the auto parts store... they have more info from Experience than the younger crowd.

Good Idea! I used a couple 2x6 decking boards i had laying around and bolted those to the body where it attaches to the frame ot make a more even place to set the body on my saw horses. I had planned on suspending it at one point, but with all the polebarn roofs that caved in near me last winter, mine doesnt need the extra weight on the tresses. rebelwire.com/ - Looks like a good product, only heard a couple people that have used it, but they are more than happy with it. www.ronfrancis.com/ -Bare bones or express kits should be all you need and more. Yes they make some for VW also. now these kits do cost quite a bit more, however the labeling, and customer support makes (call as often as you want during install, or on the road if something happens) a huge difference. Key thing to keep in mind is if you know how to do the wiring, the rebel is for you. If you are one to just look at it and think, ok, now what... Ron francis costs more because they offer the support. There is also www.painlessperformance.com/- They are more mainstream vehicles, and you would have to come up with something you have to do yourself.

Yes, Welcome to the family Bigness & Little Bigness. Just bringing that smile to your sons face is well worth every cent of the car no matter what you paid (traded) for it. Hope the two of you can make a lot of good memories with it, there will be bad as well however the end result is for the two of you, it is more than just a car, it is part of each other, you will always have the times the three of you spent together (you, your son, and the Hulk - if you name the car, lol)

I've owned my '74 b-gt since the summer of '03, stripped the gm red off, removed all the cracked uneven bondo that was just slapped on (devorse case, wife was getting the car so (ex)husband gave it the treatment...), started finding lot of issues, so I pulled the whole thing apart. with lack of time when I had money, and lack of money when I had time, I jumped at my '76 b-gt and got it on Christmas eve either 5 or 6 years ago.
Been doing a lot little projects on it as I could (biggest was drum to disk on rear last year). I spent most of the summer building an addition onto the polebarn, so I could get the '74 chassis and body into a more workable area. everything i did on that in the 12 years ive had it (holy crap it really has been that long...) I have now undone, so I can do it the right way. and it will be something quite different from any other I have seen to date. Soon I hope to start an archive on here like Skip has for his many toys, in which I look forward to hearing people call me crazy for what I have in mind. no spoilers here besides its something I have NOT seen done yet.
That Is who I am, someone who has had their car on the back burner for far too long, that is about to set the pilot light with a flame thrower (not talking about the ignition coil), and make your eyes burn with wonder as to "WHY DID I DO THIS?" The simple answer, It is my car, and I am making what I want because I want it like that.

I have a set of old 4 lug bolt to 5 stud adapters. Never had an issue with them until i made the epic mistake of taking the B-GT to Belle tire. Found out a couple weeks after my new tires were installed and gull wing was broken, that the stud in the set point ofthe adapter plate on my front right got stripped by an impact. I'll post pictures later. I got tired of the bare metal color of the adapters, and the silver paint i had also tried, so painted with gold engine paint and baked in the oven. look great with my Keystones, and gives me about 1" offset from the drum & disk.

Id enjoy seeing an update as well, even if its just something minor. I know what it's like to have projects on the back burner for a couple years, and its always good to look over what the next step will be just to keep interest going.

Leonard, no 1st or 3rd, so no i cant start in 3rd, but i imagian you had to floor it and start VERY slow.
From what I saw underneath the car today, it appears that I need a new Transmission mount, as the rubber is badly deteriorated. I put the car up on jack stands in the front and rear of the pan, then jacking the engine with an atv/motorcycle lift showed there was a lot of play in the engine/trans moving up and down...
I didn't pull the shifter back off to check alignment when I was looking that over because its still outside waiting for my father to get his POS goldwings put back together and out of my polebarn. He has had his 5 bikes in there for the past 2 months, only one runs, the oldest and smallest one (250 Yahama exciter). One 1100 Goldwing needs a timing belt, one 1100 goldwing needs starter, the other 750 honda statter or something dealing with ignition, the 1100 yahama carbs rebuilt...

That was giving me chills just seeing the photos... I only have one question, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING TAKING PHOTOS INSTEAD OF MOVING IT THEN?!?!?! AHHHHHHH
Make that two questions, Why wouldnt the company ask you to move your car or unload on the other side? I wouldn't want to be their boss if they make risky judgement calls like doing that without thinking of the customers property.
