WYN,
Thanks for the interest and offer to assistance. I do have dash and have gauge cluster but my GTII sat since 1986 and mice had a feast with the wiring, all the rocker switches where brittle and broken (or broke as soon as you touched them) and no indicator lights. I have all the gauges but no idea if they work, I was going to build my own dash cluster with more modern switches and would like to try and reuse my old gauges (I do like the looks of them). I have seen some original gauge sets for sale on the site but not sure if I want to spend that kind of money on 30+ year old gauges. I am also thinking of going away from the “light lock” setup and going with the linear actuator that I have seen talked about in several previous posts. If I go that way I would wire a relay into my headlight switch to operate that. This is my first car project so I am open to all suggestions and advice from those a little more experienced. Dave

Update, Car was a lot worse shape than I had originally thought. When I started to take apart I found about ½ dozen mice nest. Also as I have found out Bradly wiring isn’t great to start with and mice had chewed through most of it anyway. I also got the carpeting up and found what was supposed to be dropped pans was actually a disaster of rust and fiberglass and seat mounts about the only thing holding it together. When I pulled the seized engine apart (1600 DP) I found a cracked head. So as I was looking through craigs list (this is where the story gets better!). I found and purchased a running 1973 Beetle titled from NC so frame and pans in great shape. Previous owner had tried (unsuccessfully) to turn this car into a convertible. This is where today’s question comes in, for the $500 I paid for the car the owner through in a couple of brand new rail supports (can be seen in attached web site). Owner said they were used to stiffen the frame on convertibles? Has anybody used these? What are Pros/Cons? Thank you for your responses Dave www.mamotorworks.com/acvw-air-cooled-vw-beetle-cabriolet-support-rails-1-72-4639.html

To Scottd
I am also in NY (Buffalo) I spent some time at the DMV and they told me they wanted it registered as whatever the chassis is (was) so according to them 19xx 2dr VW is acceptable. Not sure on insurance davidsigouin brings up a good point.

Working on wiring for my GT II, and have a couple questions hope some one can help with.
1. when powering up the single headlights do you light both the low beam and high beam when in the high beam position?
2. How are the flip up headlights supposed to work? I have the "head light lock" switch but it is broken is it a momentary switch? Is the light motor power up and down? Does the motor keep the head lights up?

My GT II looks just like yours except I am about a month ahead of you in tear down process. I am in Buffalo so I am well aware of rusted bolts and rotted floor pans. I found that “Thunder Bolt” made by Well*Worth works the best for seized bolts. As far as the wiring goes I have come across about 5 mice nest in my project everywhere from under seats, in the tunnel and in the head liner and it appears the mice like to snack on wiring? I have decided that I wanted to use lighted and labeled rocker switches and found two possible sites (I have not ordered yet). Another thing to consider before even starting to wire is you have your basic wiring that is already there (lights, ignition, wiper motor etc…) but what do you want to add? I will be adding front and rear side marker lights (to make the car more visible), adding a 3rd break light, Interior light (overhead and under dash), amplifier for stereo, power antenna, back-up lights, and front fog lamps. These all require additional wiring, relays and switches (plus where will you locate the additional switches as the dash is small). Its better you plan out ahead then try to add it in later. Just my thoughts, but since I am a newbee here I am sure you the more experienced guys will have lots to add. Good luck with your project; I have set a goal of spring to have mine on the road! Question, can someone clarify? "WYN" response is that you can only drop the pan 1" because of seat clearance but contrary to this Jeff's CD has plans for dropping the pan 3". Is the difference between GTI and GTII? Anyone who has done this on a GTII I would appreciate input.

New GTII owner.
I found mine at the scrap yard last fall and it was destined for certain destruction.. Basically the car has sat since 1986 (per registration sticker) and I was told it was in a barn until last fall when someone called the scrap yard to come and get it. That’s where I stumbled upon it. Because of other commitments, this past week is the first chance I have really had to get into it
The interior is in bad shape (dry rot) but the body is in good shape. Previous owner had already dropped the pans and glass is in good shape except side door windows are broken. I have learned a lot from this board I have also purchased Jeff’s CD. My plan is to get it running, clean it up, and fix just what is needed to make road ready. If it is as fun to drive as it looks then I will consider dumping more money into it.
I was thinking of applying a bed liner type coating to the floor instead of replacing the carpets, any thoughts? Pros - quick, easy, durable and easy to clean (I understand these have a tendency for leaking water). Cons- possible road noise and heat.
Also are there any patterns available for the interior and carpet? I did see Skip’s post with what interior parts he has for sale and am contemplating that but not exactly the color I was looking for.
Any thoughts comments are appreciated!

New GT II owner. Does anyone have any towing experience with one of those two wheeled car dolly's? Is clearance an issue? Any potential damage to the trans axle for long tows? Thank you!
