Hey Skip,
I just cant get them to play nice together anyway I do it. It is all good until I try to ad the tail lights to the mix. I can run the top as turn signals and the bottom as break lights, but the second I had the tail light wire everything goes haywire...haha

Pictures!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is 1157, has 2 pins. 1156 has 1 pin The heavy wire inside bulb is BRAKE Tail light / Brake or tail light / Turn. You can't have both on one bulb!

Gotcha Skip.
I am just using a round tail light I picked up at Northern Tool. I am guessing it is not what I need. two wires coming out the back. Not LED.
I have brake lights and turn signals now, but if I turn on the headlights and the tail lights go on I loose brake lights.

Just two wires?
Are the mounts metal? Or are they rubber?
If they are rubber you have the wrong lights. They are single filament.
If they are metal...you may have the wrong lights, but you may have the right lights. If they are metal then you need to look at the bulb. 1 filament or 2?

Yup...there is the problem. They are the 1156 bulbs which are single filament.
Your local NAPA may sell just the sockets for the 1157 bulbs.

On to the charging problem. Checked out the generator today and the top post was reading around 9.5 volts. out of the regulator was not much more.

Generator should crank out 14+ volts at the main lug

Dumb question. how should the generator light be hooked up? I mean I have a wire on the harness for it, but I notice it does not turn on when I put the key on. Only when I start the car. Should be be grounded, attached to the ignition, etc?

Power supply (usually from the key) to the bulb. Wire from the 61 tab on the regulator to the other side of the bulb.

So like from the Acc tab or something on the ignition?

From the run spot on the switch. The tab that is energized when you start the car and release the key.

Did this and I seem to be charging now. The light will now turn on when I turn the key on and will turn off almost when the car is started. I say almost because while driving the light is on but ever so faint.
Also I looked in the bentley manual and maybe I missed it. What fluid is used for the transmission? I want to check it and either fill it or change it.
Thanks

If I remember right the standard VW transaxle uses 90 weight gear oil. Get the bottle with the pump, it is much easier to fill that way. There is a plug in the side you fill it just to the bottom of the plug. Warmest....

If you are changing the trans oil make sure the side plug can be removed before taking out the 2 bottom ones. I use 80w90 gear oil, no problems. The plug uses a 17mm allen key, no room for a socket. I took a grade 8 metric bolt with a 17mm head, heated it and bent 90 deg to make a key. Slipping a pipe or a socket with extension over the threaded end gives the necessary torque. Fill plug is on the driver's side.
The plugs are pipe thread, do not over tighten.
